The Associazone ITACA and the city administration of Fossacesia in collaboration with the Berlin international Ensemble CORNUCOPIA are pleased to announce
the first "marenostrum" competition for musical composition.
The competition is devoted to the theme of the Second Festival dell'Armonia "marenostrum" (24-26 September 2010 in the Abbazia di S. Giovanni in Venere di Fossacesia): folk music and folk music- inspired traditions in the mirror of contemporary music.
Task description
The prescribed task is to compose a work based on, or applying in some way, an old folk song or folk dance-melody originating in one of the countries with a Mediterranean coast. The melody can be freely chosen; examples are to be found for downloading at http://www.gaby-bultmann.de/links/links.html.
General requirements
The following instrumentation should be employed, either in part or as a whole (Line-up of Ensemble Cornucopia):
1 Violin
1 Viola
1 Violoncello
1 Recorder(sopranino to double bass) player or also doubles as a singer (mezzo soprano)
1 Oboe/cor anglai player, who also double as a singer (alto)
1 Clarinet (in B-flat or A)
1 Baglama (saz) player, who also doubles, similtaneously if required, as a Turkish-style singer (baritone)
1-2 pianists (piano solo, piano duett, or piano and electro-keyboard)
1 soprano singer
A conductor is at hand, and the lower register recorders and the baglama are amplified. Extra information about the baglama(saz) and recorders can be downloaded at http://www.gaby-bultmann.de/links/links.html.
The length of the composition should be from 5-10 minutes.
The competition is open for composers of all nationalities and without age limitation.
Applicants should provide the following material:
- A score in conventional paper format and/or as pdf on a CD Rom in 5 copies
- (optional) a recording or computer simulation on CD in 5 copies
The material should be sent in anonymous form, postmarked no later than the 5 July to:

The scores will not be sent back and will remain in the archive of Ensemble Cornucopia.
The work(s) may have already been performed, but must not have been awarded in another competition. Each participant is allowed to enter more than one work.
Every score must be marked with a password or code representing the applicant and be accompanied by a sealed envelope, marked with the same password and containing the following items: name, address, telephone, e-mail, nationality, date of birth of the composer, curriculum vitae, bank transfer confirmation for the entry fee, and a declaration that no prize has been won (by this composition) up till now.
The entry fee of 40 Euros (30 Euros for composers 30 years and under) should be transferred to the following account:
